Paramedic/Advanced Paramedic/Emergency Medical Technician EMT

Paramedics, Advanced Paramedics & Emergency Medical Technician EMT’s must be registered with the Pre Hospital Emergency Care Council (PHECC), the regulatory body for pre-hospital care in Ireland.

Paramedic

A paramedic provides care & transport of an ill or injured patient following a 999/112 call. The Paramedic can provide intermediate life support. This includes the skills listed for EMT and the insertion of a laryngeal mask airway & nasopharyngeal airway, 12 lead ECG, peak flow meter, cease resuscitation, and cervical injury decision; and the administration of specified medications.

Advanced Paramedic

The Advanced Paramedic is principally engaged in responding to patients who access the 999/112 service for emergency medical assistance and can provide advanced life support. This includes the skills listed for Paramedic and the use of an endotracheal tube, intravenous cannulation, manual defibrillation, thrombolysis, needle thoracocentesis, needle cricothyrotomy and urinary catheterisation.

Emergency Medical Technician

EMTs administer basic life support including automated external defibrillators, oropharyngeal airways, bag-valve-mask, glucometry and basic trauma care; and may administer certain medications.

 

Eligibility

To be eligible to join the Register you must hold the National Qualification in Emergency Medical Technology (NQEMT) as awarded by PHECC at the appropriate registration level or higher. There are three distinct routes that lead to the award of an NQEMT qualification:
- Successful NQEMT Examinations
- Recognition of Prior Learning and successful NQEMT Examinations
Recognition of Qualifications Obtained Outside the State of Ireland

 

Application Process

Applicants must submit a completed application form in hardcopy accompanied by:
- 1 x Passport photo (this must be an ID quality photo in which the applicant is clearly identifiable)
- €10 Annual Registration Fee (covers one years registration or part thereof). Payment should be made online (or by including a cheque, postal order or bank draft with the application - payable to the Pre-hospital Emergency Care Council).

Incomplete applications will be returned to the applicant, unprocessed. Complete applications are processed within 28 days. Once processed, licence and registration certificate are posted to the address supplied on the application form.

 

Temporary Registration

Professionals who intend to provide services on a temporary and occasional basis in another country within the EU Member States, EEA countries and Switzerland submit a written declaration in advance to the host country.
