Chartered Engineer

Competent Authority

Engineers Ireland is the competent authority for chartered engineers in Ireland.

Application Process to become a Chartered Engineer

You must first check if you are eligible to apply to become a Chartered Engineer and you must be an active member of Engineers Ireland.

You can confirm your eligibility to apply by selecting ‘My professional title’ on your member dashboard and note the tab where you can apply. If you do not have a tab or cannot locate it, call the membership team with your membership number and they can confirm your eligibility.

Chartered Engineer applications are assessed in two phases: Phase 1 (educational requirements) and Phase 2 (initial professional development). You cannot progress to Phase 2 until you have successfully passed Phase 1, or you are eligible to go straight to Phase 2 which is based on your qualifications being at the standard.

Applications are made online through your membership profile and applicants are required to have two supporters and an up-to-date CPD record.

Members can also become a Chartered Engineer through mutual recognition of a professional title from another country.

Processing Times

There are two deadlines each year for the Phase 2 (standard route) application for Chartered Engineer, Associate Engineer an Engineering Technician.

That is the last Friday in January and the last Friday in June of each year.

Your application for the title will not be assessed before this deadline. The initial assessments (Phase 1) are reviewed by the Membership & Qualifications Board monthly (except for August) and you will be advised of the outcome within five working days of the meeting
