Competent Authority

The Irish Tax Institute is the representative and educational body for Ireland’s AITI Chartered Tax Advisers (CTA) and is the only professional body exclusively dedicated to tax.

A Tax Consultant is listed by the European Commission as a regulated profession in Ireland for the purposes of Directive 2005/36/EC (on the recognition of professional qualifications).

 

How to apply for membership as a Tax Consultant with the Irish Tax Institute 

Applicants for the AITI Chartered Tax Adviser (CTA) programme must hold, an honours degree (Level 8 of the National Framework of Qualifications) or equivalent.

Applicants who do not hold a Level 8 qualification or equivalent may be considered on a case-by-case basis, through the recognition of prior learning.

Mutual Recognition of professional qualifications for EU Tax Consultants 

The EU adopted the Directive on the Recognition of Professional Qualifications [2005/36/EC] to aid the transferability of professional qualifications between EU Member States, EEA countries and Switzerland. Under the Directive, holders of qualifications from one Member State may apply for recognition to an equivalent body in another Member State.
The Irish Tax Institute is the competent authority for tax advisers in Ireland. If you:

hold a taxation qualification from another EU Member State, an EEA territory or Switzerland;

which is recognised under the Directive;
