Competent Authority
The Nursing and Midwifery Board of Ireland (NMBI) is the independent, statutory organisation which regulates the nursing and midwifery professions in Ireland.
All nurses and midwives who practise in Ireland must by law be listed on the Register of Nurses and Midwives which is maintained by the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Ireland (NMBI).
Registration Process
The registration process is dependent on where your qualifications were achieved. The application process can now be completed online at myNMBI.
Registration process for Irish-trained applicants
If you trained as a nurse or midwife in the Republic of Ireland, you will already have met the requirements set by the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Ireland (NMBI) because you will have completed a nursing or midwifery programme which they approved.
NMBI approves both undergraduate and postgraduate programmes that lead to registration in a division of the Register. In order to practice as a nurse or midwife, you must register with NMBI following successful completion of your nursing or midwifery programme.
For Undergraduates:
- NMBI must receive a completed application form for initial registration. This process will be done in conjunction with your Higher Education Institution (HEI) and linked health care facility.
- You must pay the initial registration fee, details of which are included in the Fees page.
Registration documents
Once registered, you will receive a registration pack containing your:
- Decision letter.
- Initial Registration Certificate.
- Annual Retention Certificate.
For postgraduates
In order to register with NMBI, you must complete and submit a Postgraduate Registration Application form. You need to be logged into the site through the My Account section.
Overseas Qualifications
Qualified outside Ireland - Applying for registration in one or more divisions of the Register
To practise nursing or midwifery in Ireland, you will need to complete two processes:1) Recognition of qualifications – this involves the comparison of your qualifications with the Irish education standards and requirements.
2) Registration.
Application Groups
Applicants are classified into three groups (G1, G2 and G3). Each group has is requested to submit different documents and is assessed differently. Full details on the required documents and process is available here.Fees

Means of Redress
If you are not satisfied with your decision, you can lodge a complaint with the NMBI if you have been:
- Refused registration
- Given an adaptation and assessment decision/Aptitude Test
- Failed your adaptation and assessment placement or failed full Aptitude Test
You must lodge your appeal within 56 days of receiving your decision. You need to complete an online form which you can access by logging into the My Account section
After you have lodged an appeal, your application will be reviewed by NMBI’s Registration Committee at its next meeting. The Registration Committee, which is made up of seven members of the NMBI Board, may decide to:
- Uphold the original decision
- Seek further information
- Issue a new decision
Temporary Registration
G1 and G2 applicants may provide their services in Ireland on a temporary and occasional basis. NMBI look at the following criteria to assess the provision of nursing and midwifery services temporarily: Duration, Frequency, Regularity, Continuity.
This option is available for those who do not wish to establish themselves in Ireland. Applicants wishing to provide temporary and occasional services in Ireland have two application pathways:
1) Have a temporary European Professional Card (EPC). This means that your qualifications have been recognised by your home competent authority and now you may begin your registration application on MyNMBI.
2) You do not hold an EPC and would like to start the temporary and occasional recognition process with us.
Once you complete the registration process successfully, your name will appear on search the register as a provider of temporary and occasional services.

Legal Basis
The Nursing and Midwifery Board of Ireland (NMBI) was established by the Nurses Act 1950 and continues under the provisions of the Nurses and Midwives Act 2011.
