The Institute of Incorporated Public Accountants registers, licences and regulates members for the purposes providing Accounting, Auditing and related services .The Institute of Incorporated Public Accountants is a “Recognised Accountancy Body” under the terms of the Companies (Audit and Accounting) Act 2003. This allows the IIPA, subject to the requirements of the Companies Acts, issue Audit Practising Certificates that allows a qualified member of the Institute to practice as a company auditor. The Institute is also a “Prescribed Accountancy Body” under the terms of the Companies (Audit and Accounting) Act 2003.

The IIPA has “approved investigation and disciplinary procedures” as required by the Companies (Auditing and Accounting) Act 2003, and all members are required to subscribe to and comply with these procedures. Please find below a link to The Institute of Incorporated Public Accountants website.

Procedures for applying to register as a Incorporated Public Accountant

Any person wishing to describe themselves as an “Incorporated Public Accountant” and offer accounting services may apply to the Institute for membership and for an Accounting Practising Certificate. In order to describe oneself as an “Incorporated Public Accountant” an individual must be approved and receive a certificate of membership from the Institute. In order to provide accounting services to the public a member must hold an Accounting Practising Certificate.

Other procedures/formalities might a provider of such a service have to comply with, in order to exercise his/her service activities, includes: A provider of accounting services would only have to comply with the normal requirements imposed on any person seeking to establish a business in Ireland. In addition they may be required to register with the Revenue Commissioners to obtain a Tax Advisors Identification Number if they wish to engage in tax work, register on the Revenue On-Line Service (certain tax returns can now only be made on ROS).
