Procedures for chartered accountants looking to register with the Institute of Chartered Accountants to provide audit services in Ireland
To become authorised to carry out audit work in Ireland, a member of the Institute of Chartered Accountants in Ireland is currently required to hold a current Practising Certificate and show evidence that they meet the educational requirements set out in the Companies Act in relation to audit. In addition they must show evidence of compliance with the Continuing Professional Development Regulations of the Institute and show evidence of compliance with the Professional Indemnity Insurance Regulations.
The relevant application forms namely, Audit Registration form and Responsible Individual application form(s) must be completed. The Institute needs to approve the firm’s letterhead and the individual is required to pay the appropriate fee.
If a non member of the Institute of Chartered Accountants applies for audit registration, he/she must apply for audit affiliate status. Affiliate status does not confer any membership rights but obliges the applicant to comply with their regulations and enables the Institute to take disciplinary action against the affiliate if necessary.
A firm registering for audit could be a sole practitioner or take another form. A sole practitioner who is not a member of ICAI must apply to be a registered auditor, a responsible individual and an audit affiliate. For firms that are not sole practitioners, non member principals must become audit affiliates as must non member applicants for responsible individual status.
