Electricity/Gas Services

The Commission for Energy Regulation (CER) is Ireland’s independent energy regulator whose focus is to regulate the Irish electricity and gas sectors in the interests of consumers. The CER protects consumers by working for a safe, secure and sustainable supply of electricity and natural gas, in a competitive market which delivers reasonable prices and a good quality service.  The CER has economic, consumer and safety-related responsibilities in the Irish energy sector. The CER is required under Irish law to licence electricity generators and suppliers who operate in Ireland as gas shippers and suppliers. Please find below the link to the CER website.

With the exception of certain small players, service providers of electricity and gas in Ireland must apply to the CER for a licence. If a licence is granted, as applicable the license holder must sign up to and abide by the rules of the trading and settlement code (TSC) for electricity or the code of operations in gas.

The relevant competent authorities in Ireland in the case of the additional procedures/formalities specified above are local authorities, An Bord Pleanala, EirGrid or ESB Networks (the operators of the transmission and distribution systems respectively), Gaslink (the gas network operator), the Environmental Protection Agency, the Department of Communications, Energy and Natural Resources, and the Dept of Environment, Community and Local Government. Please find links below to the relevant competent authorities specified below. EirGrid, ESB Networks and Gaslink are relevant for obtaining access to the electricity and gas networks.
